Ryan Garcia, De La Hoya Want Gervonta Davis For Cinco De Mayo Clash

Ryan Garcia resoundingly says he’s ready to make the leap from prospect to top-flight contender and champion in 2021.

The lightweight upstart has a tough test in front of him in Luke Campbell on Saturday night from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas on DAZN.

Should Garcia (20-0, 17 KOs) get past Campbell (20-3, 16 KOs) successfully, he plans on calling out Gervonta Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) in the ring during his post-fight interview.

“I’ll be screaming Davis’ name right after for a Cinco de Mayo fight. Just wait for my callout,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com in an interview. “I’m blessed to be in the position to make these fights happen.”

Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya is a big fan of Garcia’s plans and aspirations as well.

“Ryan loves boxing. He loves training. He understands the business, but he also wants to become great. It makes my job easier,” De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com in an interview.

“Depending on how he gets past Luke Campbell, there are a lot of variables that come into play. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Tank Davis fight. I love that fight for his next fight. Tank Davis is an amazing fighter. Ryan’s style with Tank’s style of fighting would create a huge and wonderful event for the sport. Both guys crossover. Both guys can fight, and they are at a crossroads for their young careers.”

The lightweight division is loaded with young talent. In addition to Garcia and Davis, the likes of Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko also fight in the weight class.

Garcia is eyeing Davis, but if his next fight is against any of the aforementioned foes, both he and the public alike should be satisfied.

On the flip side, an oft-discussed opponent that might resurface for Garcia, not to mention much easier to make, is Jorge Linares.

Garcia and Linares were on a collision course to meet for much of 2020, but that fight was scrapped altogether due to various circumstances around COVID-19.

Linares beat Campbell in a competitive split decision in September of 2017.

Golden Boy might be inclined to arrange one last credible test before unleashing Garcia with the rest of the lightweight lions.
