Sergio Martinez Stops Fandino in Seventh of Comeback Fight

Former two division world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez returned to boxing with a victory by knockout, as he stopped Spanish contender Jose Miguel Fandino in the seventh round in a fight that took place on El Malecón de Torrelavega, in the Spanish community of Cantabria.

The event was part of the new normal that is being lived in the middle of the pandemic, as one thousand spectators were in the stadium under a strict sanitary protocol.

Dressed in the colors red and black, accompanied by his friend Miguel de Pablos, and sporting a huge smile on his face, Martínez entered the ring for the first time since 2014 – when he was knocked out by Miguel Cotto in the WBC middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Martinez (52-3-2, 29 KOs), 45-years-old, was facing an opponent who was ten years his junior.

“The legend is back,” it was announced to the crowd. Martinez wore a protection on his right knee, the same one that haunted him with injuries during the final few years of his career.

Martinez was a bit more aggressive than he’d been in the past, and he still displayed quick reflexes during exchanges and with his movement.

After controlling the action and nearly ending things in the sixth, Martinez unloaded with heavy blows in the seventh to send Fandino down. As the referee was issuing his count, Fandino’s corner threw in the towel to end the fight.
