Fury is due to face Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight and he is also obligated to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte, before his scheduled fight with IBF, WBA and WBO champion Anthony Joshua in 2021.
But the Gypsy King’s US promoter, Bob Arum, has revealed he could be upgraded to ‘franchise’ champion in order to circumvent his fight with Whyte and skip straight to his world title clash with Joshua.
When asked about Fury, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Sky Sports: “We are addressing every weight category separately. The WBC is in the process of contacting every champion to assess their current status and plans.
“The WBC will be looking into each category and will review each case and rule taking into consideration the variables that have to do with each case.”
